Our improv curriculum

foundational COURSES: Have fun and learn the basics!

Our foundational courses are rooted in our fun, sequential approach to teaching improv comedy. Newcomers should start at our Level One class. If you’ve studied or performed improv in the past, it might be cool for you to start with our Level Two class. Feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions!

Level One: Improv Basics

Learn the fundamentals of improv comedy in a fun, well-paced setting. This eight-week class covers the basics of performing funny improv scenes. Designed for beginners and also for experienced improvisers.

Level Two: Long Form Concepts

In this class we strengthen the basics from Level One and introduce the core skills and concepts required to sustain long-form improv comedy scenes and perform long-form improv comedy shows.

Electives AND DROP INS: Get good at improv!

Our multi-week electives and one-off drop-ins are opportunities to work with master improv comedy instructors on a topic of their choosing. Drop-ins happen some Saturdays at 1:30pm! Multi-week electives are offered based on instructor availability and student interest.

Musical improv comedy: IT’S MAGIC

Musical Improv Level 1: Musical Improv Basics

Learn the magic that is created by blending improv comedy and music in this class taught by two of the world’s best musical improv comedy teachers!

Musical Improv Level 2: The “Made-up Musical”

Learn the “Made-up Musical,” by far the most popular form for Musical Improv Comedy!

Intermediate courses: Become a Performer

Our intermediate courses are open to students who have completed our foundational curriculum and either want to become improv performers, or want the challenge of studying improv at a more rigorous level. Students enrolled in our advanced courses will receive more personal and direct feedback than in our foundational courses.

Level Three: Game of the Scene

In this class we sharpen our approach by purposefully building our scenes around fun patterns that we discover or create. The “Game of the Scene” is a core concept in long-form improv and is a requirement for more advanced study at Buffalo Improv House. Students in our Level Three class will learn The Harold, a popular improv format based on funny ideas that come back in different ways.

Level Four: Performance Study

An eight-week course where you will work with a master improv teacher on a topic of their choosing. Our Level Four: Performance Study class is designed for advanced and experienced performers, and each one is different, so this course is intended to be repeated.
